MANCHESTER, N.H. - A goal by senior defender Kagiso Rhenoster (Mafikeng, South Africa/Mmbatho) in the 74th minute broke a 1-1 tie and allowed the Caldwell College men's soccer team to defeat St. Anselm College, 2-1 in the first game of the Southern New Hampshire Tournament Thursday afternoon at St. Anselm's Melucci Field. The non-conference game was the 2008 season-opener for both teams.
The Hawks scored the first goal of the game in the 13th minute, when Jeff Dell'Orfano took a pass from Sam Lamptey and beat Cougar goalkeeper John Plaugic (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) for a 1-0 lead. In the 38th minute, freshman forward Jonathan Costa (Mississauga, Ontario/Philip Pocock) notched his first collegiate goal to tie the game at 1-1. Then with just less than 17 minutes to play in the second half, Rhenoster blasted a shot into the upper right corner of the goal to put Caldwell ahead to stay. It was Rhenoster's first career game-winning goal.
Plaugic made three saves for the Cougars to preserve the win, while St. Anselm's John Corridan was credited with one save.
Caldwell plays at Southern New Hampshire University on Saturday, August 30, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
