WATERBURY, Conn. - The Caldwell College baseball team lost to Post University, 3-0 in the first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game for both teams Tuesday afternoon at Municipal Stadium. The Cougars, who have lost six straight games, are now 5-8 on the season, while the Eagles improve to 6-11.
Post, which was held hitless by Caldwell starter Robert Casal (Howard Beach, NY/St. Francis Prep) through the first three innings, scored twice in the bottom of the fourth for a 2-0 lead. Jim Conto's infield single plated the first run, then Curtis Anthony stole home on a double steal with Conto. The Eagles added a third run on a single by Corey Huffine in the bottom of the seventh. Pitcher Brendan Wyman (1-2) did the rest, scattering four hits while walking two and striking out six in a complete-game shutout.
Caldwell threatened in the eighth, putting runners on first and second with no outs. But a double play and groundout ended the inning and the threat.
Sophomore Omar Velazquez (Astoria, NY/Long Island City), right, had two of Caldwell's four hits. Casal (2-3) worked 6 1/3 innings, fanning 11 and walking five while giving up five hits and three runs, two earned, to take the loss.
Next up for the Cougars is a CACC game against Felician College on Thursday, Mar. 27 in Caldwell's home opener. The single game is set to start at 2:00 p.m. at Smith Field in Parsippany, N.J.
