RINDGE, N.H. – The Caldwell College baseball team fell to Bryant University, 3-2 in 10 innings at the NCAA Division II Northeast Region Tournament Saturday afternoon at Pappas Field. The defeat eliminates the Cougars from the tournament and ends their season at 25-15.
After Bryant tied the game with two out in the bottom of the ninth, T.J. Magnell led off with a single, then advanced to third on a throwing error. Dylan Stone followed with a single to left field to bring home Magnell with the game-winning run.
Freshman Adric Saxon (Coral Springs, FL/Broward CC) put Caldwell on top early when his groundout plated junior Tommy Murphy (Monroe, NY/Washingtonville) from third in the top of the first for a 1-0 lead. Bryant tied the game in the bottom of the fourth, when Jeff Vigurs' sacrifice fly brought home Nick Campbell. The score remained knotted at 1-1 until the top of the eighth. With one out, freshman Omar Velazquez (Astoria, NY/Long Island City), left, doubled, then moved to third on a fly out. Freshman Raymond Keelan (Barnegat, NJ/Southern Regional) followed with a two-out single to right that allowed Velazquez to score the go-ahead run. But in the bottom of the ninth with two out and Jason Alexander on third, Vigurs singled to tie the game at 2-2 and force extra innings.
The loss overshadowed an outstanding performance by sophomore right-hander Stephen Pfeil (Hampstead, NH/Pinherton Academy), right, who allowed two runs on six hits while fanning six in 8 1/3 innings. Freshman Buddy Riggs (Coral Springs, FL/Taravella) pitched 2/3 of an inning and took the loss, while Adam Vuolo earned the win in relief for the Bulldogs (34-23).
This was the second trip to the NCAA Northeast Regional in the past four years for the Cougars, who also went 1-2 at the 2004 Tourney.
