RINDGE, N.H. – The Caldwell College baseball team lost to Adelphi University, 4-0 in the winner's bracket of the NCAA Division II Northeast Region Tournament Friday night at Pappas Field. The fourth-seeded Cougars (25-14) will play fifth-seeded Bryant University on Saturday, May 19 at 2:30 p.m. in an elimination game, while the second-seeded Panthers (36-15) remain unbeaten in the tourney and will face top-seeded Franklin Pierce College at 11:00 a.m.
The Panthers scored two runs on a pair of doubles and a single in the top of the first to take a 2-0 lead. A sacrifice fly by Bill Melillo plated Mike Colonna for a 3-0 advantage. Adelphi pitcher Michael Myers held the Cougars without a hit until freshman Andrew Robertson (Coral Springs, FL/Taravella) singled with one out in the bottom of the fifth. Freshman Raymond Keelan (Barnegat, NJ/Southern Regional) led off the bottom of the seventh with a single, eventually advancing to third on an error and fly out. But Myers struck out Robertson to end the threat.
In the bottom of the eighth, freshmen Jon Irwin (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) and Omar Velazquez (Astoria, NY/Long Island City) hit back-to-back singles and eventually advanced to second and third with two out. Again Myers got out of the jam by forcing a groundout. Rob DeGennaro's second double of the game plated Ralph Tropiano in the top of the ninth to put the Panthers up 4-0.
Junior pitcher Tommy Murphy (Monroe, NY/Washingtonville), right, kept the game close, allowing three runs on seven hits while fanning 10 in seven innings of work. But it was Caldwell's inability to get to Myers that decided the outcome. The senior right-hander went the distance and scattered five hits to earn the shutout and improve to 10-0.
Caldwell continues play in the Northeast Region Tournament on Saturday, May 19 against Bryant University (33-23) which eliminated Wilmington College with a 5-1 win earlier today.
