BASEBALL DEFEATS CONCORDIA, 7-2


BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - Freshman Jon Irwin (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) and junior Chris Chiarappa (Elmont, NY/Holy Trinity) each had three hits as the Caldwell College baseball team beat Concordia College, 7-2 in a non-conference game Thursday afternoon at the Clipper Baseball Field. The win gives the Cougars an overall record of 19-9, while the Clippers drop to 14-19 on the season.

The Cougars opened the scoring in the top of the first inning, when freshman Omar Velazquez (Astoria, NY/Long Island City) scored on a groundout by freshman Raymond Keelan (Barnegat, NJ/Southern Regional), left. The Clippers knotted the game up at 1-1 with a run in the bottom of the first, but Caldwell regained the lead with two runs in the second. A sacrifice fly by freshman Doug Hilgenberg (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) and an RBI double by sophomore Jorge Torres (Coral Springs, FL/Taravella) put the Cougars ahead 3-1. Keelan's sixth home run of the season to lead off the fifth made it 4-1 Caldwell, then Keelan singled home Irwin and Hilgenberg in the sixth for a 7-1 advantage. The freshman outfielder finished with four RBIs on the day.

Irwin finished the day 3 for 3 with a run and a stolen base, while Chiarappa was 3 for 5 with a double and two runs scored. Sophomore pitcher Stephen Pfeil (Hampstead, NH/Pinherton Academy) allowed six hits and two runs while striking out four in 7 2/3 innings to improve to 5-2 on the year.

The Cougars play a non-conference game against Adelphi University on Friday, Apr. 27 in Garden City, N.Y.
