PFEIL, TORRES LIFT COUGARS PAST NYACK IN BASEBALL, 6-1

NYACK, N.Y. - Sophomore right-hander Stephen Pfeil (Hampstead, NH/Pinherton Academy), left, pitched a complete game and sophomore Jorge Torres (Coral Springs, FL/Taravella) hit two home runs as the Caldwell College baseball team defeated Nyack College 6-1 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Thursday night at Nyack High School. The victory completes the season sweep of the Warriors and gives the Cougars a 16-6 overall record, including an 8-1 mark in the conference. Nyack drops to 6-25, 4-6 CACC.

Caldwell started the scoring in the top of the third inning, when freshman Adric Saxon (Coral Springs, FL/Broward CC) blasted a two-run home run, his team-leading eighth of the year, for a 2-0 lead. The score remained 2-0 until the top of the sixth, when freshman Jon Irwin (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) and junior Tommy Murphy (Monroe, NY/Washingtonville) each drove in a run to put the Cougars up 4-0. After Nyack scored a run in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single by Billy Gleason, Torres hit a solo home run in the top of the seventh to make the score 5-1 Caldwell. In his next at-bat, Torres homered again in the top of the ninth for his fourth of the season. The Cougars, who lead the nation in scoring at 9.6 runs per game, now have hit 30 home runs in 22 games this season.

Pfeil worked all nine innings and allowed seven hits, one run and one walk while striking out six to improve to 4-2 on the year. Murphy, who had two doubles, and freshman Raymond Keelan (Barnegat, NJ/Southern Regional) joined Torres as Cougars who had two hits in the game. Phil Messerian pitched six innings and took the loss for Nyack.

Caldwell, ranked seventh in the latest Northeast Region Poll conducted by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, host fourth-ranked Adelphi University in a non-conference game on Friday, Apr. 20. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m. at Smith Field.
