NYACK, N.Y. - Senior defender Matt Broderick (West Keansburg, NJ/Raritan) scored twice to help the Caldwell College men's soccer team defeat Nyack College, 3-0 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match Thursday afternoon at Mosely Field. The victory gives the Cougars (8-3-3 overall) a 5-1-1 mark in the conference, while the Warriors fall to 5-7-2, 1-4 CACC.
Broderick tallied the only goal the Cougars would need just five minutes, 43 seconds into the game, when he took a pass from freshman defender Andrew Loughnane (Harrison City, PA/Penn Trafford) and blasted a shot from 18 yards out for a 1-0 lead. The goal was Broderick's first in his 57-game career at Caldwell. Rain made the playing conditions difficult, and the game was delayed for 30 minutes due to lightning just seven minutes into the second half. Two minutes after the game was resumed, Broderick scored an unassisted goal from a sharp angle in the 54th minute to put the Cougars ahead 2-0. Junior forward Chad Bennett (Kingston, Jamaica/Campion) added an insurance goal, his team-leading ninth of the season, off an assist from junior defender Kagiso Rhenoster (Mafikeng, South Africa/Mmbatho) in the 62nd minute, to complete the scoring.
Matt Broderick became the second Broderick brother to tally two goals in one game this season. Freshman midfielder Bryan Broderick (West Keansburg, NJ/Raritan) scored twice in Caldwell's 3-1 win over Post University on Sept. 25.
Junior goalkeeper John Plaugic (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) made four saves to record his second straight shutout and sixth of the season. Peter Murphy stopped six shots in goal for the Warriors.
Next up for the Cougars is a non-conference home game against LeMoyne College on Tuesday, Oct. 16. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m. at Caldwell Field.
