PARSIPPANY, N.J. - The Caldwell College baseball was swept by Bloomfield College in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at Smith Field, eliminating the Cougars from the CACC playoff race and ending their season. The Cougars finish with an overall record of 18-25 and a CACC mark of 11-14. Bloomfield is now 25-25, 17-10 CACC.
Bloomfield's Webster Zachary hit a two-run home run to spark a three-run first inning for the Deacons. But the Cougars battled back, tying the game with a run in the second and two more in the third. Senior Nick Mauro (Nutley, NJ/Nutley) hit his team-leading sixth homer of the year in the bottom of the second, then junior Billy Ryan (Toms River, NJ/Manchester) followed with a two-run blast in the bottom of the third that knotted the game at 3-3. The Deacons again used the long-ball to take the lead for good, as Kevin Lauranzon led off the sixth inning with a solo home run to make the score 4-3. Peter Dziopa's RBI single in the seventh added an insurance run as the Deacons wrapped up the first game.
Joseph O'Donnell earned the victory for the Deacons, allowing five hits and three runs in a complete-game effort. Freshman Stephen Pfeil (Hampstead, NH/Pinherton Academy) took the loss, yielding eight hits and four runs in six innings of work.
In the second game, Bloomfield again scored first with a run in the top of the third, only to have the Cougars tie the game in the bottom of the inning on another homer by Ryan, his fifth of the season. After Lauranzon's sacrifice fly in the fourth put the Deacons ahead 2-1, the Cougars scored twice in the bottom of the fourth to take their first lead of the day. With sophomores Joe Hydro (Flemington, NJ/Immaculata) and Ryan Glasco (Manhasset, NY/Manhasset) on first and second, sophomore Tommy Murphy (Monroe, NY/Washingtonville) doubled, scoring both runners for a 3-2 lead.
However, the lead would not last, as Bloomfield scored five runs in the top of the fifth to take a 7-3 advantage. Lauranzon and Lino Mariot each had two-run hits in the inning. The Cougars got one run back in the bottom of the fifth on Glasco's RBI single that scored junior Efrain Velazquez (Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) from second. After the Deacons scored a run on a wild pitch in the top of the sixth, a grounder by sophomore Rich Gili (Manorville, NY/Shoreham-Wading River) plated senior Landon Viessy (Oakland Gardens, NY/Cardozo) in the bottom of the sixth to make the score 8-5. The Cougars put the lead-off batter on base in the bottom of the seventh, but were unable to stage a comeback.
Dominican's Chad Duesler hit a three-run home run in the second inning of game one and added an RBI single in the fourth to help the Chargers take a 10-0 lead through the top of the fifth. The Cougars answered in the bottom of the fifth with two runs on four hits. Sophomores Ryan Glasco (Manhasset, NY/Manhasset) and Eric Theiss (Deer Park, NY/Deer Park) each had RBI singles to cut the deficit to 10-2. Sophomore Americo Eaderesto (Manorville, NY/Center Moriches) came home on a groundout by freshman Jorge Torres (Coral Springs, FL/Taravella) in the bottom of the sixth to round out the scoring.
Bloomfield's Ricky Maldonado earned the win, while senior Travis Muessig (Mt. Sinai, NY/Mt. Sinai) gave up three hits and four runs, three earned, in four innings to take the loss.
Caldwell's sixth-place finish in the CACC standings ends a string of four-straight appearances in the CACC Tournament. The Cougars captured the conference title in 2004.
