PARSIPPANY, N.J. - Freshman pitcher Stephen Pfeil (Hampstead, NH/Pinherton Academy) tossed a complete game and allowed one run to guide the Caldwell College baseball team to a 4-1 win over Dominican College Friday afternoon at Schafer Field. The Cougars improve to 18-21 overall and 11-10 in the CACC after handing first-place Dominican (34-13, 21-3 CACC) just its third conference defeat.
The only run off of Pfeil came in the second inning, when Tom Keegan homered to left field. The Cougars responded in the top of the third inning with a pair of runs to take a 2-1 lead. Sophomores Chris Chiarappa (Elmont, NY/Holy Trinity) and Joe Hydro (Flemington, NJ/Immaculata) both walked to lead off the inning. After sophomore Tommy Murphy (Monroe, NY/Washingtonville) bunted the runners to second and third, a groundout by junior Billy Ryan (Toms River, NJ/Manchester) scored Chiarappa to tie the game. Hydro then scored on an RBI single by senior Landon Viessy (Oakland Gardens, NY/Cardozo) to give Caldwell the lead.
Chiarappa's sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth that scored freshman Jorge Torres (Coral Springs, FL/Taravella) extended the lead to 3-1. The Cougars took a three-run advantage in the top of the seventh on an RBI single from sophomore Eric Theiss (Deer Park, NY/Deer Park). Viessy went 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI to lead Caldwell at the plate, while Theiss was 2 for 4 on the day.
Pfeil scattered 10 hits over his nine innings of work, never allowing more than two hits in an inning. He also struck out a career-high nine batters while walking none to improve to 5-4 on the season. Tommy Mejia (7-1) gave up seven hits and four runs in 7 2/3 innings to take the loss, his first of the season.
The Cougars and Chargers will play a doubleheader at Smith Field on Saturday, Apr. 29, beginning at 12:00 p.m.
