COUGARS SPLIT CACC DOUBLEHEADER AT POST

WATERBURY, Conn. - The Caldwell College baseball team defeated Post University 4-3 behind the pitching of freshman Stephen Pfeil (Hampstead, NH/Pinherton Academy) in the second game of a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader with the Eagles on Friday at Municipal Stadium. The Cougars, who lost game one 5-2, are now 16-19 overall and 9-8 in the CACC, while Post is 12-34, 5-13 CACC.

Pfeil pitched all seven innings of the second game, allowing nine hits and three runs, two earned. He faced 30 Post batters without giving up a walk while striking out six. Sophomore Tommy Murphy (Monroe, NY/Washingtonville) gave Pfeil and the Cougars an early lead when he led off the first inning with a single, stole second and advanced to third on a groundout. Junior Billy Ryan (Toms River, NJ/Manchester) grounded out to third, scoring Murphy for a 1-0 Caldwell lead. The Eagles tied the game in the top of the third on an RBI single from Chris Ouelette.

Then in the fifth, a pair of Post errors helped the Cougars score three runs to take a 5-1 lead. Sophomore Joe Hydro (Flemington, NJ/Immaculata) singled and later scored on an error. With two men on and two out, junior Efrain Velazquez (Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) tripled down the rightfield line, scoring Ryan and freshman Jorge Torres (Coral Springs, FL/Taravella), who had reached on a dropped fly. The Eagles scored two runs in the top of the seventh and had the tying run on second with two outs. But Pfeil (3-4) struck out Matt Smolley to end the game.

The Eagles snapped a 14-game losing streak with a 5-2 victory in game one, with pitcher Brendan Wyman holding the Cougars to just five hits. Caldwell got on the scoreboard in the top of the first on an RBI double by senior Landon Viessy (Oakland Gardens, NY/Cardozo). Post took the lead in the second with two runs, only to have Caldwell tie the game in the fifth on an error. But three runs in the bottom of the fifth put the Eagles ahead to stay.

The two teams were scheduled to play a single game on Saturday, but the game has been postponed to May 2. Caldwell's next game is on Monday, Apr. 24 against Wilmington College. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m. at Smith Field.
