PARSIPPANY, N.J. - Despite hitting three home runs, the Caldwell College baseball team lost to Adelphi University, 22-11 Thursday afternoon at Smith Field. The defeat drops the Cougars to 15-18 on the year, while the Panthers improve to 17-12. The two teams combined for 40 hits, including 27 for Adelphi, and nine extra-base hits.
The Panthers scored seven runs in the first four innings before Caldwell scored twice in the bottom of the fourth on RBI singles from freshman Aaron Hoffstatter (Glasco, NY/Saugerties) and sophomore Ryan Glasco (Manhasset, NY/Manhasset). Three more Adelphi runs in the fifth put the Panthers ahead 10-2. In the bottom of the fifth, junior Efrain Velazquez (Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) hit a three-run homer, followed by a run-scoring double by Glasco in the sixth to make the score 10-6. Again the Panthers answered with two more runs in the top of the seventh to stretch their lead to 12-6.
The Cougars pulled to within two runs in the bottom of the seventh, when senior Landon Viessy (Oakland Gardens, NY/Cardozo), pictured, hit a grand slam that made it 12-10. But Adelphi would score 10 more runs in the last two innings to put the game away. Senior Nick Mauro (Nutley, NJ/Nutley) hit a solo homer in the ninth for his fourth home run of the season.
Adelphi's Pat O'Neill had five hits, Thomas Cali and Doug Anderson had four hits apiece, and Stephen Malvagna drove in five runs to pace the Panthers. Chris Palladino earned the victory, while senior Joe Acconzo (Howell, NJ/Howell) took the loss for Caldwell.
