LYNDHURST, N.J. - A strong outing by senior pitcher Travis Muessig (Mt. Sinai, NY/Mt. Sinai), coupled with a six-run fourth inning, allowed the Caldwell College baseball team to defeat Felician College, 9-2 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Monday afternoon at Breslin Field. The Cougars are now 4-5 in conference play and 11-14 overall, while the Golden Falcons fall to 18-15 overall, 6-5 CACC.
After scoring a run in the second and third innings on RBIs from sophomores Eric Theiss (Deer Park, NY/Deer Park) and Tommy Murphy (Monroe, NY/Washingtonville), the Cougars broke open the game in the top of the fourth. Sophomore Chris Chiarappa (Elmont, NY/Holy Trinity) led off with a single, eventually scoring on an error to make the score 3-0. A sacrifice fly by junior Billy Ryan (Toms River, NJ/Manchester) with the bases loaded brought home sophomore Joe Hydro (Flemington, NJ/Immaculata). Senior Landon Viessy (Oakland Gardens, NY/Cardozo), left, followed with a two-run double, then scored on a single by junior Efrain Velazquez (Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.). Murphy plated the sixth run of the inning with and RBI single to give the Cougars an 8-0 lead.
Hydro scored an unearned run in the fifth to put Caldwell ahead 9-0. Meanwhile, Muessig, right, was busy dominating the Felician batters, giving up just two hits while striking out nine through eight innings. The Golden Falcons scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth on two hits and a Caldwell error, but Muessig finished the game to improve to 3-2 on the year. It was his second complete-game victory of the season.
Caldwell plays a non-conference game with C.W. Post on Tuesday, Apr. 11, beginning at 3:00 p.m. at Smith Field.
