ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. - Caldwell College sophomore infielder Rich Gili (Manorville, NY/Shoreham-Wading River), right, had four hits and four runs batted in as the Cougars baseball team defeated Molloy College, 11-4 in a non-conference game Tuesday afternoon at Molloy. The victory gives the Cougars a 6-10 overall record, while the Lions fall to 8-13.
After surrendering a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning, the Cougars scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of the third. With two out, Gili struck out but reached on a dropped third strike. He then scored when junior Billy Ryan (Toms River, NJ/Manchester) doubled. Senior Landon Viessy (Oakland Gardens, NY/Cardozo) made it 2-1 when his single plus a throwing error plated Ryan. In the top of the fourth, Gili gave Caldwell a 4-1 advantage when he singled home freshman Jorge Torres (Coral Springs, FL/Taravella) and sophomore Chris Chiarappa (Elmont, NY/Holy Trinity).
Molloy eventually tied the game with a run in the bottom of the fourth and two more runs in the fifth. But the Cougars took the lead for good with two runs in the top of the sixth to make the score 6-4. Gili and Viessy each had RBIs in the inning. The Cougars tacked on five runs in the top of the ninth, with Gili, Viessy and senior Nick Mauro (Nutley, NJ/Nutley) recording RBIs. Ryan went 3 for 4 with two runs, an RBI and two walks, while Viessy, Mauro, Torres and sophomore Eric Theiss (Deer Park, NY/Deer Park) each tallied two hits.
Senior right-hander Travis Muessig (Mt. Sinai, NY/Mt. Sinai) gave up four hits and four runs in five innings of work to record the victory. Freshman Stephen Pfeil (Hampstead, NH/Pinherton Academy) blanked the Lions over four innings of relief.
Next up for Caldwell is a home game with N.J.I.T. on Wednesday, Mar. 29. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at Smith Field.
