WATERBURY, Conn. - Marjorie Prado hit a jumper with four seconds left in the game to break a 70-70 tie and lift Post University over Caldwell College in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference women's basketball game Thursday night at Post's Drubner Center. The defeat overshadowed an outstanding performance by Caldwell junior guard
Shannon Coyle (Matawan, NJ/St. John Vianney), left, who dished out a career-high 12 assists, the most in a game this season by a CACC player. The Cougars are now 6-15 overall, including a 6-12 mark in the CACC, while Post improves to 11-11, 10-9 CACC.
Sophomore forward
Melissa Freeman (Cresskill, NJ/Cresskill) scored 10 points in the game's first seven minutes to spark the Cougars to a 21-9 lead. But the Eagles answered with a 21-6 run of their own, including eight points from Jen Rose, to take a 30-27 lead with 6:27 left in the half. The lead would change hands five more times before the break, with Caldwell tying the game on a basket by sophomore guard
Dana Leary (Bridgewater, NJ/Immaculata) with a minute to go, then taking a 40-39 lead at the half on a free throw by Freeman.
The second half saw seven ties and seven lead changes, with neither team leading by more than six points. Post's Tadj Williams broke a 60-60 tie with a lay-up with 4:33 remaining, only to have Caldwell regain the lead on a three-pointer from Coyle. After a turnover by Williams, Leary extended the lead to 65-62 with a jumper at the 3:12 mark. But two straight baskets sandwiched around a Cougar turnover put the Eagles on top, 66-65 with 2:15 left. The teams each went 1-of-2 from the line on back-to-back possessions before a lay-up by sophomore guard
Phylicia Holmes (Roselle, NJ/Roselle) gave Caldwell a 68-67 lead with 51 seconds to play. On the next possession, Prado buried a three-pointer to put Post ahead 70-68 with 37 seconds remaining. But Coyle answered for Caldwell with a lay-up with 22 seconds on the clock to tie the game at 70-70.
The Eagles ran the clock down before finding Prado to the left of the lane. Her eight-footer was good, giving Post a two-point lead with 4.2 seconds left. Caldwell had one last chance, but Holmes' three-point attempt was off the mark.
Coyle scored 10 points to go with her 12 assists for her first career double-double. Holmes, right, tallied a season-best 15 points while grabbing 12 boards for her second double-double this season. Freeman scored all 15 of her points in the first half, while Leary finished with 14 points. Prado tallied 16 points and Williams recorded 14 points, 14 boards, nine steals and six assists for Post.
Next up for the Cougars is a conference road game at Wilmington College on Saturday, Feb. 11. Game time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
