CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College women's basketball team lost a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game to Wilmington College, 84-66 Saturday afternoon at the George R. Newman Center. With the loss, the Cougars fall to 3-6 overall and 2-3 in the CACC, while the Wildcats improve to 4-2, 3-1 CACC.
Wilmington jumped out to a 13-4 lead early, eventually building a 17-point advantage, 29-12 with 7:49 left in the first half. The Wildcats still led 36-20 with 2:41 on the clock before the Cougars fought back into the game with a 10-2 run to close out the half. Sophomore forward Mackenzie Lynch (Wayne, NJ/DePaul Catholic) tallied six of Caldwell's points in the run as the Cougars trailed 38-30 at the half.
The Wildcats halted any momentum the Cougars gained at the end of the first half by rolling to a 17-3 run over the first 4:20 of the second half to take a commanding 55-33 lead. Caldwell staged another comeback with a 12-2 run of its own that made the score 72-63 with 5:49 to play. But that's as close as the Cougars would get, as Wilmington finished the game on a 12-3 spree to clinch their third conference win in four games.
Lynch finished with 20 points and 10 boards for her third double-double in four games for Caldwell. Junior guard Khaliqa Davis (Newark, NJ/Bloomfield Tech) notched season highs in three categories with 15 points, six steals and five assists. The Wildcats were led by Jamie Gallagher and Sherrelle Holmes, who each tallied 20 points. Gallagher went 6-of-9 from three-point range, while Amelia Simmons recorded 15 points and 10 boards in the win. Wilmington shot a blazing 66.7 percent from the floor in the second half en route to making 59.2 percent for the game.
The Cougars' next game is Jan. 4, when they host Georgian Court University in a CACC contest. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. in the Newman Center.
