COUGARS DROP TWO TO DOMINICAN IN BASEBALL

ORANGEBURG, N.Y. - The Caldwell College baseball team had its four-game winning streak ended by Dominican College with a 4-3 loss in extra innings as the Cougars lost both games of a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at Veterans Field. The Cougars dropped to 13-16 overall and 7-5 in the CACC, while the Chargers, who won the second game 8-3, improved to 16-16 overall and 11-6 in the conference.

In the first game, the Cougars took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning. Sophomore Andy Chunn (Lewes, DE/Cape Henlopen) (pictured) led off with a single, followed by a walk by junior Nick Mauro (Nutley, NJ/Nutley). Chunn later scored on an error, while Mauro came home on a wild pitch. The Chargers tied it up with a pair RBI singles by Mike Zani and Neil Ross in the bottom of the fifth. The Cougars briefly regained the lead when Mauro scored on an error in the sixth, only to have Dominican tie the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the inning on a passed ball. Neither team scored in the seventh, forcing extra innings. Dominican scored the winning run when Eliezer Nunez walked, stole second, advanced to third on a single and scored on an error.

In the second game, the Chargers scored four runs in the first two innings to take an early 4-0 lead. The Cougars got on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth, when sophomore Billy Ryan (Toms River, NJ/Manchester) doubled, then scored on a sacrifice fly by senior Fadul Bambino (Astoria, NY/Queensborough CC). In the top of the sixth, senior Hasani Whitfield (Briarwood, NY/Molloy) doubled, followed by a single by Chunn. Whitfield then scored on an error, and freshman Chris Chiarappa (Elmont, NY/Holy Trinity) pulled the Cougars to within one when his groundout plated Chunn to make the score 4-3. But Dominican put four runs on the board in the bottom of the sixth to put the game out of reach.

Chunn led the Cougar offense, going 5-for-6 at the plate for the day, including 3-for-3 with a run scored in the second game.

The Cougars return to action on Friday, Apr. 22, when they play at Wilmington College beginning at 3:00 p.m.
