BROOKVALE, N.Y. - The Caldwell College baseball team lost a heartbreaker to C.W. Post University, 7-6 in a non-conference game Tuesday afternoon. The loss dropped the Cougars to 9-14 on the season, while the Pioneers improved to 8-7.
After taking a 2-1 lead, the Cougars surrendered five runs in the bottom of the sixth to trail 6-2 heading into the seventh. Senior Mike Kolesar (New City, NY/Clarkstown North) began the comeback in the top of the seventh inning with a single. Then with Kolesar on third and senior Joe Catenacci (Helmetta, NJ/Spotswood) on second, senior Ryan McGee (Cedarhurst, NY/Lawrence) singled home both runners to cut the deficit to 6-4. Later in the inning, sophomore Andy Chunn (Lewes, DE/Cape Henlopen) (pictured) had a bases-loaded one-out single that scored McGee and senior Hasani Whitfield (Briarwood, NY/Molloy) to tie the game and complete the comeback. Whitfield went 3-for-5 for the day to lead the Cougar offense.
But the Pioneers would get the upper hand in the bottom of the ninth, when a two-out single by Chris Caputo allowed Mike Sylvester to score the game-winning run.
The Cougars return to action on Wednesday, Apr. 13 with a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader against Nyack College. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m. at Smith Field.
