SOMERVILLE, N.J. - Junior pitcher Derek York (Lanoka Harbor, NJ/Lacey Twp) hurled a complete-game shutout as the Caldwell College baseball team defeated Felician College 3-0 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Thursday afternoon at Commerce Bank Ballpark. With the win, the Cougars improved to 7-9 overall and 2-1 in the conference, while the Golden Falcons fell to 4-16, 2-4 CACC.
The Cougars manufactured the only run they would need in the second inning, when senior Mike Kolesar (New City, NY/Clarkstown North) walked, stole second, advanced to third on a groundout and scored when sophomore Billy Ryan (Toms River, NJ/Manchester) grounded out to third. In the top of the seventh, Kolesar scored again on a ground out by Chris Chiarappa. Senior Joe Catenacci (Helmetta, NJ/Brookdale CC) completed the scoring when he singled home sophomore Efrain Velasquez (Brick, NJ/Brick Twp) later in the seventh.
Catenacci and fellow senior Hasani Whitfield (Briarwood, NY/Molloy) both went 2-for-4 at the plate in the victory, with Whitfield extending his hitting streak to 13 games. He has not recorded at least one hit in 15 of the Cougars' 16 games.
York (1-1) picked up his first win of the season by scattering four hits and walking three batters while striking out eight. Only one Felician baserunner got past second base on York, who was making his third start of the season. The righthander also showed some toughness on the mound. After being struck by a line drive in the foot in the bottom of the ninth, York struck out the next Felician batter to end the game.
The Cougars return to action on Monday, Apr. 4, when they play N.J.I.T. at Riverfront Stadium in Newark, N.J. The doubleheader starts at 4:00 p.m.
