PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Caldwell College women's basketball team lost to the University of Sciences, 57-50 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Tuesday night at Morgan Arena. The defeat drops the Cougars to 5-9 overall and 4-5 in the CACC, while the Devils, who have won six straight, improve to 10-4, 8-1 in the conference.
USP got off to a quick start and led 14-4 after seven minutes of play. Six points from freshman forward Dana Leary (Bridgewater, NJ/Immaculata) contributed to a 14-3 Caldwell run that tied the game at 17-17 at the 8:07 mark. The Cougars eventually took their first and only lead of the game after a pair of free throws from freshman forward Melissa Freeman (Cresskill, NJ/Cresskill) made it 21-20 with 6:41 left in the half. But the Devils would close out the half with a 12-5 run of their own to take a 33-25 lead into the break. Leary tallied 12 points and nine boards on 6-of-7 shooting from the floor in the half.
USP took control of the game midway through the second half with a 12-4 run that gave the Devils a 49-33 advantage with 11:35 left in the game. Caldwell came back with an 8-0 run, including four points from freshman guard Melissa Shubiak (Manville, NJ/Immaculata), to cut the lead to 49-41 with 7:18 remaining. But six straight points put the game away for the Devils, despite a 9-2 Caldwell run at the end of the game.
Leary finished with a career-high 19 points and 12 rebounds for her third double-double of the season. Freshman guard Phylicia Homes (Roselle, NJ/Roselle) matched her career-high with 10 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the free throw line. Shelby Rance had 19 points, and Leah Shumoski recorded 15 points and 11 rebounds in the Devils' victory.
The Cougars return to action on Thursday, Jan. 20, when they head back to Philadelphia, Pa., to play Holy Family University at 6:00 p.m.
