Women's Soccer Drops 1-0 Heartbreaker to Staten Island

Cougars Outshoot Dolphins, 16-6, but first half own goal dooms hosts

CALDWELL, N.J. -- Junior forward Bella Noble (Staten Island, N.Y.) blasted a game-best six shots as Caldwell University women's soccer outshot College of Staten Island, 16-6, but dropped a 1-0 verdict at Caldwell Athletic Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Dolphins (1-2) scored in the 35th minute on an own goal on a scramble in front of the net after a corner kick by Caitlyn Thompson.

Caldwell (0-5) kept up the pressure, issuing 10 of its 16 shots in the second half. CSI goalkeeper Oksana Zahirna recorded 11 saves, including a diving tip-away on a blast from inside the box by sophomore forward Jocelyn Downing (Keene, N.H.), sliding stop on a point blank shot by senior defender Izzy Marin (So. Plainfield, N.J.) in the 79th minute and finally a leaping block of Noble attempt in the 85th minute.

Sophomore Arianna Sullivan (New City, N.Y.) recorded three saves in the first 61 minutes of play before leaving the game with an injury. Junior Ryleigh Tubbs (Long Beach, Calif.) made her first appearance in goal, going the rest of the way.

The Cougars open CACC play on Wednesday at defending league champion Wilmington, in  a rematch of last year's CACC Championship match, beginning at 4 p.m.
