FLUSHING, N.Y. -- Eight Caldwell University baseball pitchers combined on a nine-hitter and junior 1B
Ethan Arter (Moorestown, N.J.) had two hits and two RBI as the Cougars took a non-league contest from Queens College, 10-5, at Hennekens Stadium on Thursday afternoon.
The Cougars put up crooked numbers in the third (four runs) and sixth (five) en route to the win. Trailing, 2-1, the Cougars used small-ball for their rally in the third frame, with runs scoring on a groundouts by junior catcher
Donny Gomez (Vineland, N.J.) and Arter and two wild pitches.
In the sixth, extra-base power put the Cougars (9-19) comfortably ahead. First, a double by junior CF
Jimmy Turchi (Bridgewater, N.J.) pushed CU's lead to 6-2, before a two-run home run by sophomore RF
Alan Hernandez (Boca Raton, Fla.) punctuated the outburst.
But pitching from Caldwell's depth of hurlers was the difference-maker in this one, as junior lefty
Patrick Tullo (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) went the first two, followed by scoreless frames by sophomore righty
Jack Edner (Bethel Park, Pa.), freshman righty
David Steward (Pennington, N.J.), soph RHP
Jovani Hallihan (Jackson, N.J.), soph southpaw
Dean Fiore (Woodbridge, Va.) and junior righty
Hayden Klyver (Wilton, Conn.) among the seven Cougars relievers that did the job.
Freshman CF
Izaiah Robinson (Franklin Twp., N.J.) had two hits and stole three bases as part of the CU attack.
The Cougars dip back into CACC play this weekend in a three-game set with the University of Bridgeport. Saturday's doubleheader at Caldwell begins at 2:30 p.m., while Sunday's single-game is set for noon in Bridgeport, Conn.
