CALDWELL, N.J. -- Junior righthander
Vinny Sangataldo (Medford, N.J.) tossed a four-hit shutout, striking out eight, lifting Caldwell University baseball to a doubleheader sweep of Bridgeport in CACC play on Saturday. Caldwell won the opener, 12-7, before taking the nightcap, 6-0.
In the opener, Caldwell opened up an early lead with a pair of three-run innings out of the gate. After senior SS
Christian Rinick (Marlton, N.J.) drove in a run with a long sacrifice fly, the Cougars got an extra life when UB couldn't corral a pop up, and senior 1B
Chris Hopf (Middlesex, N.J.) drilled his ninth home run to left for a 3-1 Cougars lead. A two-run single by Rinick made it 5-1 in the second, and after CU scored another, junior DH
Ethan Arter (Moorestown, N.J.) lifted his first home run deep over the left field wall for a 7-1 lead. Arter later added a sacrifice fly and Hopf added another RBI with a double inches inside the left field line.
Junior righthander
Jonathan Gambone (Westville, N.J.) went the first seven, striking out eight and walking just one as the Cougars (11-19, 9-13 CACC) won their fourth straight.
In the nightcap, Sangataldo was masterful, allowing just two UB runners past first, retiring the first seven batters and walking just one in the seven-inning complete game for his third win.Â
Freshman 3B
Justin Levine (Staten Island, N.Y.) drove in runs with a sacrifice fly and RBI double, Rinick added another with an infield single and Hopf capped the scoring with a sun-aided double in the fifth for the final margin.
Levine had four hits on the day and Hopf drove in five.
The Cougars and Purple Knight (11-21, 7-15) conclude their three-game set in Bridgeport, Conn. on Sunday.
