PHILADELPHIA — Junior righthander Katie O'Connor (Charlottesville, Va.) tossed a six-hit shutout in the opener and graduate righty Jayden Hill (Geneva, N.Y.) went five strong frames in the nightcap as Caldwell softball extended its win streak to eight games with a CACC doubleheader sweep at Chestnut Hill at CHC Softball Field on Thursday afternoon.
The blanking marked the fourth straight complete game win for O'Connor during Caldwell's current skein. She scattered six singles and walked none in the efficient win. Support from her Cougar teammates was provided by freshman 1B Emerson Jarrard (Carlsbad, Calif.) with two hits and two RBI and sophomore catcher Emily Kurth (Toms River, N.J.) and sophomore DP Liza Mannarino (Albany, N.Y.), who both drove in runs.
Caldwell (9-11, 4-0 CACC) broke a scoreless tie with two runs in the fifth on Jarrard's two-run single. Mannarino brought in another later that inning on a single, and Kurth's sacrifice fly an inning later provided insurance.
In game two, Kurth's two-run single keyed a three-run third inning. A single by freshman RF Kendall Mazur (Millville, N.J.) in the fourth made it 4-0, and after the Griffins (4-10, 0-2) pulled to within 4-2, a single to center by sophomore 3B Lindsay Oller (So. Plainfield, N.J.) finished the scoring.
Sophomore righthander CC Lanzi (Cumberland, R.I.) fired two hitless innings of relief for her second save.
The Cougars next host St. Thomas Aquinas College on Sunday in a non-league matchup.
