Young, Hopf star in Opener, Gambone Solid on Mound in Nightcap, Baseball Falls to Goldey-Beacom

Fourteen-hit attack in Game 1 not enough; Junior Righty Pitches into the Seventh in Game 2

CALDWELL, N.J. -- Senior DH Stephen Young Jr. (Middlesex, N.J.) had four hits, including a home run, and senior 1B Chris Hopf (Middlesex, N.J.) had two hits and four RBI, including a three-run blast in game one, but Caldwell fell in a CACC baseball doubleheader to Goldey-Beacom at Kiwanis Oval on Saturday, 13-10 and 8-1.

In the opener, the Cougars got off to a strong start, plating three runs on RBI singles by freshman 3B Justin Levine and junior LF Enrique Beltra (Monroe, N.J.) and a sacrifice fly by junior 2B Devon Cass (New City, N.Y.).

Cass pushed the CU lead to 4-1 with an RBI double in the third and a homer by Young tacked on a run in the fourth with a solo home run to left.

Junior righthander Vinny Sangataldo (Medford, N.J.) pitched four strong innings before tiring in the fifth, when GBC scored six runs to take the lead.

Caldwell (1-8, 0-4) battled back in the sixth when Hopf blasted a three-run home run, pulling the hosts to within 10-9. Two bases-loaded walks put the Cougars ahead, 11-10, in the seventh, but a pair of two-run frames by the Lightning sealed the win.

In the second game, junior righty Jonathan Gambone (Westville, N.J.) was sharp on the hill, permitting just five hits and two runs entering the seventh. But the Lightning (10-9, 3-1 CACC) tacked on six in the seventh and went on to the win.

The teams conclude the three-game set with a single contest in Wilmington, Del., on Sunday at noon.
