Lucy Coogan (Kilkenny, Ireland) scored a game- and season-high 26 and junior guard
Jah'Nel Lewis (Jersey City, N.J.) added 17, all in the second half, to lead Caldwell to its sixth straight win, a 74-47 CACC triumph over Dominican at the Hennessy Center on Tuesday evening.
The Cougars took an early 7-2 lead on a three-pointer by freshman guard Jessiah Reynoso (Passaic, N.J.) and two baskets by Coogan. After the Lady Chargers battled to within 9-6, the Cougars scored the next five, including a buzzer-beating three pointer banked in by sophomore guard
Shayne Eldridge (Howell, N.J.) for a 14-6 edge after the defensive-minded first quarter.
The Cougars (16-6, 9-5 CACC) picked up where they left off to start the second, scoring nine of the first 11 for a 23-8 lead, with two Coogan treys keying the run.
DUNY narrowed its deficit to 26-14, but the Cougars scored seven straight on Coogan's jumper and three pointer and the second of two layups by junior forward
Shauntia Alexander (No. Plainfield, N.J.) for a 33-14 advantage before settling for a 33-16 edge at the break.
DUNY (5-26. 3-10 CACC) scored nine of the first 12 in the second to get back to within 11. But junior guard
Neysa Aguilar's two baskets sandwiched around a bucket by Aguilar helped CU push the lead back up to 42-27 with 3:40 left in the third. Coogan's three with 1:06 left gave CU its largest lead of the half at 47-29, with a late three-point play by the Lady Chargers making it a 47-32 CU lead heading into the final frame.
In the fourth, Caldwell broke it open by starting off the period on a 23-8 run for a 70-40 bulge that put the game out of reach.
Alexander made all five of her shots from the floor, netting a career-high 11 points.
Nine different Cougars scored in the contest.
Brianna Pope came off the bench to score 12 to pace DUNY.
The Cougars next visit Wilmington in a noon start (note the earlier start time, moved up an hour from the original schedule.
