DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. — Senior guard Melvin Evans (Bronx, N.Y.) scored 18 points and senior forward DeAngelo Horn (Detroit) and junior guard Isaiah Philbert (Bronx, N.Y.) had 10 each as Caldwell men's basketball dropped an 82-71 non-league verdict to Mercy at the Neil Judge Student Athlete Center on Wednesday evening.
The Cougars (13-14) trailed throughout, but rallied from a 10-point second-half deficit to tie the game at 48, a jumper and free throw by Philbert capping a 14-4 run at the 14:30 mark of the second half.
But the host Mavericks (3-22) scored the next 11 points for their largest lead of the game with 11:26 left.
The Cougars had another rally in them, an 8-0 spurt pulling them back to within two. But the Mavs went back ahead by seven and made nine of 10 free throws down the stretch to secure the victory.
Evans had 12 rebounds and three assists in the contest and freshman Markeis Isley (Jersey City, N.J.) contributed eight points.
The Cougars finish the regular season on Saturday with a 1 p.m. tilt with Holy Family, with a chance to secure a CACC Tournament quarterfinal home game. It is also senior day, when Evans, Horn, forward Roniel Oguekwe (Galway, Ireland) and forward Moussa Ngom (Dakar, Senegal) will be honored pre-game.
