Horn, Evans, Big Second Half Propels Men's Basketball to Regular Season Ending Triumph over Holy Family

Fourth-Seeded Cougars to Host #5 Post in Quarterfinal on Tuesday

CALDWELL, N.J. -- On Senior Day, fittingly it was the two veteran standouts who were at the front lines of a big team effort as Caldwell men's basketball used a second-half rally to defeat Holy Family, 85-73, at the Newman Center on Saturday. Forward DeAngelo Horn (Detroit) and guard Melvin Evans (Bronx, N.Y.) posted 19 and 15 points, respectively, pacing six Cougars in double figures in the win.

Caldwell (14-14, 12-8 CACC) locked in the fourth seed in the upcoming CACC Tournament, and will host #5 Post on Tuesday at the Newman Center.

HFU (13-15, 7-13), which will enter the CACC Tournament as the #8 seed, lef for much of the first half, enjoying a lead of as many as eight points before settling for a one-point halftime edge.

Caldwell, which has won nine of its last 10 home games and will host the CACC Championships next weekend, used a 12-2 run to start the half to take a 48-39 advantage, a three pointer and pair of free throws by junior guard Jaiden Williams (New York) and pair of buckets by Evans keying the spurt.

Later, a three-pointer by junior guard Isaiah Philbert (Bronx, N.Y.) would put CU up by 13 and Horn's layup with 9:57 left gave the Cougars their largest advantage  to that point at 62-48 midway through the second.

The Tigers would get to within nine at 79-70 with 2:34 to play, but a layup by Horn, free throw by freshman forward Terence Thompson (Rochester, N.Y.) and traditional three point play by Evans over the next minute salted away the win.

Horn added six rebounds, a block and steal, Evans nabbed five thefts, Philbert finished with 12 points, Williams totaled 11, Thompson scored 10 and grabbed seven caroms, and sophomore guard Jaryn Bull scored 10 points and grabbed four rebounds in 13 consequential minutes of play.

Horn, Evans and fellow seniors Moussa Ngom (Dakar, Senegal) and Roniel Oguekwe (Galway, Ireland) were honored for their contributions ot the program in a pre-game ceremony.

The Cougars, who have won 12 of their last 16 CACC contests, last hosted a CACC quarterfinal game in 2022-23, when as the top overall seed they won the CACC Tournament championship.
