CALDWELL, N.J. -- Freshman forward
Leopold Neumeier (Berlin) converted a PK with 1:06 left in the second half, breaking a 1-1 deadlock and propelling Caldwell University men's soccer to a 2-1 non-league triumph over Monroe at Caldwell Athletic Field on Wednesday afternoon.
The goal capped a Cougars comeback that started when, trailing 1-0, junior defender
Carlos Ramos (Asbury Park, N.J.) blasted one from 25+ yards out that the MU keeper got a hand on but drove into the net to tie the match in the 66th minute.
Then as the clock ticked towards the final minute, Neumeier moved from the far post back towards the near post on a throw in, and was kicked as he went for a deflection, drawing the penalty. He lined up an drilled the kick into the right corner for the winning goal.
The Cougars (5-7-2) outshot the Mustangs (6-6-2), 11-9, and had four corner kicks to one by the visitors.
Freshman
Diogo Da Silva (Newark, N.J.) made four saves for the Cougars.
Caldwell finishes the regular season with CACC matchups at Chestnut Hill (Saturday, 2:30 p.m.) and Bridgeport (Oct. 27, 3 p.m.), with hopes for a league tournament berth still alive.
