WEST CALDWELL, N.J. -- Junior QB
Josh Smith (Parsippany, N.J.) passed for 137 yards and ran for 65 more as Caldwell Sprint Football dropped a 41-20 verdict to Mansfield University at Bonnel Field on Friday night.
After spotting Mansfield a 17-0 lead, Caldwell (1-2) scored when Smith connected with sophomore receiver
Joey Ciccotelli (Denville, N.J.) midway through the second quarter, capping an 11-play, 80 yard drive.
Smith would engineer another lengthy drive in the third, a seven-play, 51 yard sequence that ended in an 11 yard scamper by the QB just inside the right pylon.
CU's other score came much faster, when with 11:51 left in the fourth, sophomore QB
Anthony Torres (Belleville, N.J.) led senior WR
Emanuel Laluz (Lyndhurst, N.J.) perfectly, and the latter's sprinter speed took over, as he raced past the defense for the 80-yard score.
Smith finished 12-for-21 on the day, while sophomore running back
Ali Hillman (Newark, N.J.) ran for 24 yards. Ciccotelli hauled in a game-high seven passes for 70 yards and senior WR Arjun Petrave grabbed three for 47 yards.
Sophomore LB
Hector Lopez III (East Hanover, N.J.) led the Caldwell defense with 12 tackles, including eight solo, and junior LB
Kavon Hayes (Hillside, N.J.) collected seven including 1.5 for loss and a sack.
Mansfield's (3-0) Joseph Frye passed for 359 yards and three TDs, 189 (and two TDs) to Jerry Holmes Jr.
Caldwell faces Navy in a CSFL South matchup on Saturday, Oct. 10, in its next action.
