BRIDGEPORT, Conn. -- Senior guard
Melvin Evans (Bronx, N.Y) matched his career high with 28 points and senior forward
DeAngelo Horn (Detroit) contributed 19, but Caldwell men's basketball saw its five-game win streak snapped in a 92-84 defeat at CACC foe Bridgeport at Harvey Hubbell Gymnasium on Tuesday night.
Trailing for most of the first half, the Cougars took the lead on seven straight points from Evans, on a basket, a long three pointer and pair of free throws that put CU ahead, 36-33, with 4:31 to play in the half. After UB went back up by three, a three pointer by freshman forward
Terence Thompson (Rochester, N.Y.) made it a 42-41 game in favor of the hosts at the break.
UB (8-5, 5-1 CACC) made several pushes to extend its lead in the second half, but the Cougars battled back each time. The Purple Knights led by as many as 11, but a hook shot by Horn from a nice feed by Evans turned into a traditional three point play that tied the game at 78 with 3:42 to play.
But, trailing 80-78, Caldwell (5-9, 3-4) missed an opportunity to tie and the hosts were able to finish off the win by converting eight of eight free throws down the stretch.
Junior guard
Todd Rochelle (Laurelton, N.Y.) had 13 points for the Cougars and junior guard
Isaiah Philbert (Bronx, N.Y.) added 10. Rochelle and Evans paced CU with six assists each, while Rochelle registered a team-best five rebounds.
Jason Edokpayi had 27 points to lead UB.
Caldwell hosts Jefferson in a CACC matchup on Saturday at the Newman Center.
