CALDWELL, N.J. -- Junior guard
Todd Rochelle (Laurelton, N.Y.) took an inbounds pass with 0:06 left, drove the length of the floor and drained a 15 footer from the right foul line extended as the clock hit 0.4 seconds, lifting Caldwell men's basketball to a thrilling 68-66 victory over previous league unbeaten Felician at the Newman Center on Wednesday night.
Trailing, 66-63, with 1:22 left, the Cougars tied it on a traditional three-point play by senior forward
DeAngelo Horn (Detroit), who powered in a layup and made the free throw with 0:38 left.Â
Junior swingman
Jaiden Williams (New York) then came up with the defensive plays of the game, swatting away two would-be go-ahead layups, the second bounding off a Golden Falcons player to give the Cougars (7-12, 5-7 CACC) the chance to win, which Rochelle cashed in with the swished jumper.
Caldwell led for most of the contest, grabbing a 10-point lead at 47-37 with just over 15:00 to play and still enjoying a six-point edge at 53-47 on a Horn layup with 9:52 left. But Felician (16-3, 11-1) turned up the pressure, scoring 13 of the next 17 points for a 60-55 lead with 4:39 to play.
The Cougars, though, fought back, two free throws by Horn, who had a game-high 21 points and jumper by Rochelle making it a 61-59 game. After the Golden Falcons went back up by four, a transition dunk by Horn got CU back within two and set up the final sequence.
Freshman
Terence Thompson (Rochester, N.Y.) had 14 points, including two thunderous dunks, and a team-best eight rebounds. Horn added six rebounds and two blocks, and freshman forward
Markeis Isley (Jersey City, N.Y.) contributed10 points and four rebounds in 12 minutes of play.
Jeremiah Anderson and Tavian Pullock had 16 points each to lead Felician.
Caldwell next hosts Georgian Court on Saturday at 3 p.m. in CACC action.
