WATERBURY, Conn — Junior guard Todd Rochelle (Laurelton, N.Y.) had a team-best 19 points, including five three pointers, and senior forward DeAngelo Horn (Detroit) contributed 16 points and six rebounds, but four late free throws helped host Post to a 74-72 men's basketball win over Caldwell at Drubner Center on Wednesday night in CACC action.
It was a back-and-forth battle throughout. Trailing, 63-57, with 8:11 to play, the Cougars scored 12 of the next 15 points for a three-point advantage with 3:42 to play, with consecutive alley-oop dunks by freshman forward Terence Thompson (Rochester, N.Y.) from senior guard Melvin Evans (Bronx, N.Y) starting the rally, and a baby hook and free throw by Evans completing the run.
The Eagles (5-10, 4-3 CACC), though would have a comeback of their own, and led, 72-69, with under two minutes left. A jumper in the key from Rochelle narrowed the Cougars' deficit to a single point, and after the teams exchanged single free throws, Post made another for a 74-72 lead with 10 seconds left. Caldwell's final possession would end in a turnover for the final margin.
Derrick Thomas II and Taquan Williams posted game-highs of 21 points each for the Eagles.
Caldwell (5-11, 3-6) also had a double-digit scoring effort from Thompson, who scored 12 points and added three blocked shots.
The Cougars next host Chestnut Hill on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Newman Center.
