WEST CALDWELL, N.J. -- Senior QB
Jameil Lawrence (Jersey City, N.J.) passed for a school-record 268 yards, including a record-tying four TDs, and ran for 127 more yards, but a late Chestnut Hill touchdown gave the visiting Griffins a 42-35 victory in a thrilling CSFL South contest at Bonnel Field on Saturday night.
Trailing, 14-7, midway through the second quarter, the Cougars tied the game on a 43-yard TD pass from Lawrence to senior WR
Emanuel Laluz (Lyndhurst, N.J.), then took a halftime lead when freshman QB Cael Zebrowsi (Verona, N.J.), taking just his second collegiate snap, flipped an 11-yard TD strike to classmate
Joey Ciccotelli (Denville, N.J.) in the back of the end zone.
Chestnut Hill scored the first two touchdowns of the second half in the see-saw affair to regain the lead at 27-21. But senior WR
Arjun Petgrave (Cranford, N.J.) hauled in a 43-yard TD strike from Lawrence to put CU ahead. After the Griffins (1-1, 1-1 CSFL South) again went ahead, the Lawrence-to-Petrgrave combination again worked, this time a 23-yard play giving CU (1-1, 1-1) the 35-34 lead with 10:27 to play.
The game came down the final drive, when CHC converted a late fourth-and-five and scored what would prove to be the decisive TD with 1:05 to play on a run by Xavier Limehouse. The Cougars' final drive ended on a sack as time expired and CHC had its first win of the season.
Petgrave finished with six catches for 100 yards and two TDs, Ciccotelli had a school-record-tying nine grabs for 65 yards and two scores, while Laluz collected four for 67 yards and the aforementioned TD and senior WR
Darius Harrison was the possession receiver, hauling in seven for 15 yards.Â
Lawrence picked up chunks of yardage in the run game, with a 34 yard scamper and several other first-down runs.
Sophomore DB
Anthony Cummings (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J.) led the Cougars defense with nine tackles and junior DB
John Vecchiarelli finished with six stops and two pass break ups, which came on consecutive plays in the fourth quarter, both in the end zone.
The Cougars visit Mansfield next Saturday, Oct. 4, in Mansfield, Pa., at 2 p.m.
