PHILADELPHIA -- Sophomore QB
Josh Smith (Piscataway, N.J.) and senior QB
Jameil Lawrence (Jersey City, N.J.) led two touchdown drives apiece, sophomore receiver
Joey Ciccotelli (Denville, N.J.) caught six passes for 49 yards and the Cougars defense limited host Pennsylvania to 33 yards rushing as Caldwell won its sprint football opener, 29-17, over the Quakers at Franklin Field on Friday night.
The Cougars scored first, with junior RB
Curt McDougald (Elizabeth, N.J.) capping a 13-play, 84-yard drive with a one-yard plunge before sophomore kicker
Nic Mallon's (Saddle Brook, N.J.) PAT made it 7-0 with 6:43 left in the first quarter.
After the Quakers tied the game two minutes later, senior WR
Darius Harrison (Plainfield, N.J.) hauled in a 13-yard TD strike from Smith to give CU a 14-7 lead. A second quarter Penn TD and half-ending field goal put the hosts up, 17-14, at the break.
Caldwell (1-0) dominated the second half, taking the lead on a 14-yard pass from Lawrence to senior WR
Arjun Petgrave (Cranford, N.J.), one of his five receptions on the evening, and ensuing two-point reception by Ciccotelli for a 22-17 lead with 11:29 to play in the third.
Caldwell then controlled the ball for most of the fourth quarter, a Lawrence 1-yard dive extending the advantage to 29-17 with 8:26 to play in regulation. The Cougars forced a three-and-out on the next UPenn possession, then held the ball for the final 6:18, converting first downs on two 14-yard runs by McDougald, a 13-yard scamper by Lawrence and finally a five-yard scramble by the Cougars QB on fourth down from the Quakers seven to secure the win.
The Cougars defense was outstanding, holding the hosts to 33 rushing yards for the game, recording five sacks and nabbing an interception by
Anthony Cummings that set up the Cougars' final touchdown.
Freshman lineman
Trever Stevenson (Ambridge, Pa.) was a monster for the Cougars D, making 15 tackles (12 solo), including 2 1/2 sacks and 5 1/2 tackles for loss, a pass breakup and a QB hit.
Senior DB
Yves Jean was all over the field for CU, making nine stops, and sophomore LB
Damian Tavares (Pasco, Wash.) had eight tackles, 1.5 for loss, and two pass breakups.
Smith finished with 87 yards passing and a TD, plus 67 yards rushing before exiting with an injury late in the fist half. Lawrence was nearly as good, passing for 66 yards and running for 22 to secure Caldwell's first win over Penn in its history.
Caldwell next hosts Chestnut Hill on Saturday, Sept. 27, at 6 p.m. at Bonnel Field.
