CALDWELL, N.J. -- Senior outfielder
Liam Lombardi (Stony Point, N.Y.) had five hits in the two games and drove in three runs in the opener as Caldwell baseball split a non-league doubleheader with D'Youville on Sunday at Kiwanis Oval. The Cougars took the opener, 13-9, while the Saints claimed the nightcap, 11-4.
In game one, the Cougars rapped out 14 hits, taking the lead for good on a sixth-inning RBI single by junior RF
Stephen Young Jr. (Middlesex, N.J.), who had also drive in runs in the second and fourth. Then, leading 9-8 on Young's hit, teh Cougars added another in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by senior DH
Liam James (Roseland, N.J.), then after the Saints got to within 10-9, added insurance in the seventh on Lombardi's two-run single up the middle and the next inning on sophomore CF Christian Petino's (Flemington, N.J.) sac fly for the final margin.
Junior righty
Matt Perez (Washington Twp., N.J.) earned the win with two innings of one-hit relief.
In Game two, Lombardi's two hits, for a total of five on the day, and two by junior 1B
Jimmy Kurtz (Buena, N.J.) were the highlights.
The Cougars (16-14) visit Queens College on Tuesday in a 3 p.m. non-league contest in Flushing, N.Y.
