NEW CASTLE, DEL. -- Senior first baseman
Brooke Martin (Oakland, Maine) was the only Cougar to have a multi-hit game, as CU (18-17, 9-5 CACC) fell in a doubleheader sweep to the Wilmington Wildcats (23-13, 12-2 CACC) 3-2 and 7-0 at Asbury Field.
In the opener, Wilmington took the early lead on a RBI double in the 1st inning.
Senior shortstop
Ashleigh Tavaska (Jackson, N.J.) answered back with a RBI double of her own in the 4th inning to tie the score at 1. Senior second baseman
Grace Vondracek (Odessa, N.Y.) scored on the play.
The Wildcats retook the lead in the bottom half of the 4th inning on a RBI double and a RBI single.
With Caldwell down 3-1 in the 6th inning, freshman right fielder
Lexi Weiss (Norristown, PA.) was able to trim the deficit to one when she reached on a fielder's choice that brought home Vondracek.
Unfortunately CU ran out of time and was not able to complete the comeback, as the Cougars put the potential tying and go-ahead runs on base in the seventh but couldn't push them across.
In game two, Wilmington shut down Caldwell's bats. Wilmington took a commanding 4-0 lead with a three-run third.
Caldwell will return home and host the first-place Bridgeport Purple Knights in a doubleheader starting at 2:30 on Tuesday.
