Rigas Stars on Mound in Opener, Baseball Splits Pair at Lincoln

Brown Laces Four Hits in Opener, Drives in Two

LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. -- Sophomore righthander John Rigas (Lincoln Park, N.J.) fired a seven-hitter over eight innings, striking out a career-high 12 and senior 3B Sean Brown (West Orange, N.J.) went 4-for-5 with two RBI, helping Caldwell baseball to a 7-2 win in the opening game of its CACC doubleheader at Lincoln on Wednesday afternoon.

The Lions (7-34, 3-25 CACC) won the nightcap, 7-1. to gain the split.

In game one, the Cougars (20-21, 13-17 CACC) jumped out to an early lead, plating three in the first on an error, passed ball and RBI double by Brown. The Cougars tacked on a run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by senior 1B Liam James (Roseland, N.J.) and two others on RBI hits by sophomore CF Christian Petino Jr. (Flemington, N.J.) and Brown.

Rigas was masterful, earning his third win of the season with the effort as he limited the Lions to just two runs, one earned.

In game two, Lincoln used a three-run fourth for a 4-0 lead, and had a 6-0 advantage before junior 1B Jimmy Kurtz (Buena, N.J.) sacrifice fly plated the Cougars' only run of the game.

Caldwell opens a four-game set with Felician on Friday, hosting the Golden Falcons in a doubleheader beginning at noon. It's also Senior Day, as Brown, Oscar Fajardo (Brentwood, N.Y.), Liam Lombardi (Stony Point), James, Brandon Scalisi (New City, N.Y.) and Joseph Witt (No. Arlington, N.J.) will be honored between games.
