CALDWELL, N.J. -- When Holy Family's leadoff hitter in the opener in Game One blasted an inside-the-park home run, and Caldwell junior SS
Christian Rinick (Marlton, N.J.) matched the feat in the bottom of the inning, fans at the CACC doubleheader knew they were in for a treat. And the teams didn't disappoint, with two action-packed contests, both coming down to the tying run at bat or on base in the final inning, before the Cougars prevailed, 12-10 and 9-5, at Kiwanis Oval on Tuesday.
In the opener, after spotting the Tigers (10-16, 5-9 CACC) a 2-0 lead, the Cougars rallied with three in their half of the frame, beginning with Rinick's four-base jaunt and culminating with an RBI single by junior LF
Jimmy Kurtz (Buena, N.J.).
In the second, after HFU had retaken the lead, junior RF
Stephen Young Jr. (Middlesex, N.J.) blasted a no-doubt three-run home run deep over the left field wall to put CU back ahead. The hosts would extend to a 12-5, a pair of RBI singles by Rinick and a bases-loaded, two-run hit by junior catcher
Chris Hopf (Middlesex, N.J.) the key at bats.Â
HFU would rally, putting the tying runs on base in the ninth, but the Cougars' fifth pitcher of the game, redshirt sophomore
John Rigas (Lincoln Park, N.J.) got a called strikeout to end the game.
The nightcap had some fireworks of its own, with the Cougars taking a 4-1 lead after two, with RBI hits from senior DH
Liam James (Roseland, N.J.) and senior 2B
Sean Brown (West Orange, N.J.) producing run-scoring hits. Then, leading 6-4, the Cougars added three insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth of the scheduled seven-inning contest, on a throwing error and sacrifice fly by Kurtz, in a pinch hitting role.
The Tigers would again battle back, scoring a run and loading the bases in the top of the seventh. But Brown, on in relieve to start the frame, induced a game-ending comebacker to give the Cougars their sixth straight win.
James finished 3-for-3 in both games, and sophomore CF
Christian Petino Jr. (Flemington, N.J.) had five hits in the two games for Caldwell (15-11, 9-9 CACC).
Junior LHP
Danny Keane (Union, N.J.) pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings in the opener to get the win, while freshman lefty
Jared Jacobus (Flemington, N.J.) allowed just one earned run on four hits in 4 2/3 frames in the nightcap to gain his second win.
The Cougars are back at on Thursday, when they visit league foe Dominican at Clover Stadium in Pomona, N.Y.
