MIAMI SHORES, FL -- The senior duo of shortstop
Ashleigh Tavaska (Jackson, N.J.) and third baseman
Grace Vondracek (Odessa, N.Y.) sparked the Cougars' rally in the opener, while Tavaska, the freshman duo of pinch-hitter
Georgia Andreoli (Lambertville, N.J.) and designated player
Maddie Matkosky (Horseheads, N.Y.) each drove in a RBI in the nightcap as Caldwell fell in a doubleheader sweep to Barry, 7-5 and 14-3 at Buccaneer Field on Sunday.
Barry jumped out to an early 5-0 lead after the first three innings. Caldwell would answer back with a furious comeback to tie the score at 5 in the top of the 5th.
Vondracek got the Cougars on the board with an RBI single that drove in sophomore center fielder
Brooke Freschi (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J.).
Tavaska had the big blow as she hit a massive 3-run triple that cut the deficit to 5-4. Sophomore first baseman
Amanda Batista (Carteret, N.J.) Vondracek and sophomore left fielder
McKenzie Nazionale (Ontario, Calif.) all scored. Tavaska came home to tie the score on a wild pitch.
Unfortunately, Barry would wind up winning the game on a walk-off two-run home run in the bottom of the 7th inning.
In game two, Barry (22-8) pulled away from the Cougars and won via a 5-inning run rule. CU (0-5) traded runs twice with Barry in the first couple innings on two ground outs.
Barry would score 12 unanswered runs before Andreoli knocked in a RBI single in the top of the 5th.
Caldwell will try to earn its first win when the Cougars travel to Winter Park, FL and face Rollins College in a doubleheader on Tuesday starting at 1 PM.
