CALDWELL, N.J. -- Senior SS
Ashleigh Tavaska (Jackson, N.J.) hit a first-inning three-run homer down the line in right and a fourth-inning grand slam deep to left center, bookending a 13-run, 11-hit outburst for Caldwell softball in a 13-2 triumph in game one of its non-league doubleheader with Queens on Monday at Caldwell Athletic Field. She drove in the go-ahead run in the third inning of Game 2 as the Cougars (16-15) went on to the sweep, 7-2.
In the opener, Tavaska lifted a high drive to right that stayed fair, landing a few yards over the fence for a 3-0 lead. Senior 1B
Brooke Martin (Oakland, Maine) followed with a shot that cleared the left center field fence for back-to-back homers. Tavaska hit an RBI single in the second, scoring on an ensuing error to make it 6-0, and after the Knights (6-14) pushed across two in the top of the fourth, Caldwell put it away with three consecutive RBI walks and Tavaska's bomb. Senior righty
Jayden Hill (Geneva, N.Y.) completed the one-hit gem for the five-inning run rule win.
In the nightcap, senior 2B
Grace Vondracek (Odessa, N.Y.) and Tavaska plated runs with singles in the third inning to give CU a 2-1 lead, then a run-scoring single by sophomore CF
Brooke Freschi (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J.) and RBI groundout by freshman catcher
Amanda Preston (Warwick, R.I.) pushed the lead to 4-1.
A bit of baserunning derring-do closed out the scoring for the Cougars, as both Tavaska and sophomore
Amanda Batista (Carteret, N.J.) came around to score on a ground out by freshman RF
Lexi Weiss (Norristown, Pa.), with Batista alertly streaking around third and beating the throw home.
Freshman righthander
Haleigh Fisher (Smyrna, N.Y.) came on in relief to start the third inning, pitching four shutout innings, permitting just two hits and no walks. Freshman
Caroline Lanzi (Cumberland, R.I.) started the game, went the first two innings, then came back in the seventh to finish off the win.
Caldwell next hosts Dominican in a key CACC doubleheader on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m.
