NEWARK, N.J. -- Senior 1B
Oscar Fajardo (Brentwood, N.Y.) had his first home run of the season, drove in four runs and scored three in the opener, and soph 3B
Devon Cass (New City, N.Y.) hd three hits, four RBI and stole three bases in the nightcap as Caldwell baseball complete a four-game weekend sweep of Bloomfield with a pair of CACC wins on Sunday at Vailsburg Park.
Caldwell (13-11, 6-7 CACC) put up a seven-run third and eight-run sixth in the opener. A two-run home run by junior RF
Stephen Young Jr. (Middlesex, N.J.) got things going in the third, which also featured a two-run double by sophomore CF
Christian Petino Jr. (Flemington, N.J.) and an RBI walk to Rinick.
Fajardo's grand slam capped the big sixth inning that also included a two-run single by sophomore RF
Justin Cifelli (Nutley, N.J.). That was more than enough for junior righthander
Ben Foote (Elmer, N.J.), who was nearly perfect in his four innings of work, permitting just one single and no walks, striking out four to earn his second win.
In game two, the Cougars rallied from a 4-1 deficit after three, tying the game in the fourth on a succession of hits, including an RBI single by Cass and ground-rule double by sophomore catcher
Akkash Santiago (Toms River, N.J.). The go-ahead run came in the sixth on a single by Cass, before the Cougars broke it open in the seventh, scoring six, with two-run singles by Brown and Cass doing the most damage.
Junior lefty
Danny Keane (Union, N.J.) was effective in relief, hurling three no-hit innings to close out the game and earn his first win of the year.
The Cougars bashed out 27 hits and collected 15 stolen bases in the twinbill.
Caldwell next hosts Holy Family in a key CACC doubleheader on Tuesday at Kiwanis Oval.
