CALDWELL, N.J. -- Freshman DP Maddie Matkosky (Horseheads, N.Y.) had the game-winning hit in the bottom of the seventh of game one, and senior 1B Brooke Martin (Oakland, Maine) matched the feat in game two as Caldwell softball ran its winning streak to five with a pair of non-conference victories over Southern Connecticut, 2-1 and 3-2 at Caldwell Athletic Field on Wednesday.

In the opener, the Cougars (12-13) tied the game in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single by senior SS Ashleigh Tavaska (Jackson, N.J.), plating pinch runner, soph Amanda Batista (Carteret, N.J.), after soph RF Rianna Sparandero (Middletown, N.J.) had singled and advanced to second on a sacrifice. Then in the bottom of the seventh, Martin singled and was replaced by pinch runner, freshman Emily Tavaska (Jackson, N.J.), who advanced to second on a sacrifice by Ashleigh Tavaska. Matkosky's sharp liner to left plated Emily Tavaska, sliding in ahead of the throw to give CU the win.

Freshman Haleigh Fisher (Smyrna, N.Y.) won her third straight decision, all in her last three appearances, with a brilliant complete-game three hitter, as she fanned three and walked just one.

In the nightcap, Caldwell took a 2-0 lead in the second on an RBI double by sophomore CF Brooke Freschi (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J.) and a SCSU error. After the Owls (9-7) tied it in the fifth, freshman Lexi Weiss (Norristown, Pa.) doubled to lead off the home seventh. She advanced to third on senior 2B Grace Vondracek's (Odessa, N.Y.) infield single, and both runners moved up a base on a throwing error. Martin then lifted a fly over the head of the drawn-in outfield and Weiss scored as the ball rolled to the fence, making a winner of senior righthander Jayden Hill (Geneva, N.Y.), who tossed two scoreless innings in relief of freshman righty Caroline Lanzi (Cumberland, R.I.), in her best outing of the season.

Martin had four hits in the doubleheader to pace the Caldwell attack.

The Cougars resume CACC play on Thursday when they visit Post in a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
