CALDWELL, N.J. -- Junior
Alfonso Esposito (Middlesex, N.J.), freshman reliever
Johnny Amato (Roselle Park, N.J.) and senior
Brandon Scalisi (New City, N.Y.) had standout performances on the mound, but a three-run, seventh inning rally in game two gave visiting Post (9-8, 8-0 CACC) a sweep of its CACC baseball doubleheader at Kiwanis Oval on Sunday afternoon.
In the opener, Esposito permitted just six hits and three runs (two earned), striking out five. Fellow righthander Amato tossed three hitless innings to keep Caldwell (9-9, 3-7) in it. But a seventh-inning error pushed across the tiebreaking run and though the Cougars had the tying run in scoring position in the eighth and ninth, couldn't push across the equalizer.Â
Junior shortstop
Christian Rinick (Marlton, N.J.) and junior RF
Stephen Young Jr. (Middlesex, N.J.) had two hits apiece for the Cougars.
The nightcap brought more heartbreak for Caldwell in a stunning last-inning defeat. Senior 1B
Liam Lombardi's two-run triple in the fifth frame of the seven-inning contest put the hosts ahead, 3-1. But the Eagles pushed across a run in the sixth and three in the seventh and won despite a solid effort by Scalisi, as the righty gave up eight hits and fanned three in the complete game.
Rinnick rapped out three more hits  and stole three bases, bringing his season total to a team-best 14.
Caldwell continues league play on Wednesday with a visit to South leader Goldey-Beacom on Wednesday.
