Young Jr. Hits Home Run As Baseball Falls in Doubleheader Sweep to Goldey-Beacom

Cougars total 15 hits against CACC rival

HOCKESSIN, DE -- Junior right fielder Stephen Young Jr. (Middlesex, N.J.) doubled and hit a two-run home run for his first blast of the season in game 2 of the doubleheader against the South 1st place Goldey-Beacom Lightning (18-6, 8-0 CACC) at Doyle Field. Young Jr. led the Cougars with three hits and two RBIs. Goldey-Beacom won game 1 12-3 and game 2 7-5.

Caldwell amassed 15 hits over the two games combined.

In game 1, the Lightning jumped out to an early lead by scoring six runs in the 1st inning.

Redshirt sophomore CF Christian Petino Jr. (Flemington, N.J.) and junior SS Christian Rinick (Marlton, N.J.) each got Caldwell on the board in the 5th inning. Petino Jr. hit a RBI single and Rinick had an RBI groundout to cut the deficit to 6-2.

Goldey-Beacom would add four more runs between the 5th, 6th, and 7th innings to give themselves a 10-2 cushion.

Senior LF Liam Lombardi (Stony Point, N.Y.) got Caldwell a little closer when he scored on a fielding error by the Lightning catcher in the 8th to trim the lead to 10-3.

The 1st place Lightning capped off the scoring with a two-run home run in the bottom of the 8th.

In game 2, Caldwell (9-11, 3-9 CACC) was the one who took the lead in the 1st inning. Young Jr. hit a double and advanced to third base on a fielding error by the Goldey-Beacom shortstop which allowed Rinick to score. Lombardi brought in Young Jr. on a RBI ground out.

Goldey-Beacom struck back in the 2nd inning to tie the score at two on a fielding error by a Cougars infielder.

Young Jr. gave CU the lead back when he hit a two-run home run in the 3rd inning.

The Lightning would pull away in the 4th inning after scoring five consecutive runs to put them up 7-4.

In a last-minute comeback attempt, junior DH Jimmy Kurtz (Buena, N.J.) scored on a fielding error by a Goldey-Beacom second baseman in the 6th inning to make the score 7-5.

Caldwell will host Bloomfield College in a doubleheader on Saturday starting at noon.
