BRIDGEPORT, CT -- Â Senior second baseman
Sean Brown (West Orange, N.J.) drove in the tying run in the seventh and go-ahead run in the ninth, and senior LF
Liam Lombardi (Stony Point, N.Y.) threw out the potential tying run at the plate in the bottom of the ninth to preserve a 7-6 CACC baseball triumph over Bridgeport in the opener of a doubleheader at Seaside Park. UB came back to take the nightcap, 6-4.
In the opener, after falling behind 2-0 early in the 1st, redshirt sophomore CF
Christian Petino Jr. (Flemington, N.J.), junior RF
Stephen Young Jr. (Middlesex, N.J.), and freshman DH
Reymundo Gonzalez (Kenilworth, N.J.) all helped engineer a five-run comeback between the 2nd and 3rd innings.
Petino Jr. got the scoring started with an RBI single to center field. Gonzalez came home to score. Young Jr. then hit a 2-run double. Petino Jr. and junior SS
Christian Rinick (Marlton, N.J.) scored. All three of these runs came in the 2nd inning.
In the 3rd, Gonzalez drove home Caldwell's fourth run on a ground out to SS. Brown scored.
Petino Jr was at it again in the 3rd inning, this time with an RBI single to left field. Redshirt freshman third baseman
Devon Cass (New City, N.Y.) was brought home for the Cougars' 5th run.
Bridgeport would come back and score four unanswered runs between the 4th and 6th innings to take a 6-5 lead before Brown and Lombardi helped earn the Cougars the win.Â
In game 2, Caldwell (8-4, 2-2 CACC) came up a little short. The Cougars got on the board first on a RBI single in the 2nd inning by junior DH
Jimmy Kurtz (Buena, N.J.). Brown scored on the play.
Bridgeport (4-13, 2-2 CACC) scored six straight runs in the 3rd and 4th innings to take a 6-1 lead.
CU's rally made it interesting in the 7-inning game. Young Jr. hit an RBI single in the 5th which scored Kurtz. Later in the 5th, Rinick came home to score on a wild pitch. The score after the 5th inning was 6-3 Bridgeport.
Junior first baseman
Chris Hopf (Middlesex, N.J.) scored the Cougars last run in the 6th after Cass was thrown out at second base.
Caldwell will host Jefferson in a CACC doubleheader starting at 3 PM on Tuesday.
