CALDWELL, N.J. -- Junior guard
Isaiah Philbert (Bronx, N.Y.) swished a left corner three pointer with 1:41 left to cap a 13-point rally, propelling Caldwell men's basketball to its fourth straight win, a 94-92 triumph over No. 21 Assumption in a non-conference matchup at the Newman Center on Sunday.
After leading by as many as 13 at 68-55 with 13:36 yto play, Assumption (7-4) still maintained an 81-74 edge, with 6:46 to play. An and-one layup by senior forward
DeAngelo Horn (Detroit) pulled CU to within 81-77 and after a layup by junior forward
Jaiden Williams (New York) made it 87-86, Greyhounds, with 2:21 left, the hosts got it back on a turnover, and Philbert took a pass from freshman forward
Markeis Isley (Jersey City, N.J.), aided by a fine screen from sophomore guard
Tristan Rogers (Brooklyn, N.Y.)Â and in one motion flipped in his second three pointer of the game to give CU its first lead since midway through the first half.
Then, leading 91-89, Horn was fouled on a dunk attempt with 14 seconds left, making both clutch free throws for a 93-89 Cougars lead.
AU's Daouda Dembele, who led all scorers in the game with 25 points, nailed a turn-around three with four seconds left, but Philbert made one of two free throws with 1.8 seconds left to seal it.
Williams added a game-high eight rebounds, and senior guard
Melvin Evans (Bronx, N.Y.) also had 16 points, converting all five of his field goals, and a game-best five assists for Caldwell (4-8), which outrebounded Assumption, 44-36, in the triumph.
Caldwell takes the holiday break, then returns to game action at Holy Family on Saturday, January 3.
