CALDWELL, N.J. — Freshman forward Terence Thompson (Rochester, N.Y.) pulled in 22 rebounds and swatted four shots and senior guard Melvin Evans (Bronx, N.Y.) led five Cougars in double figures with 16, but visiting Goldey-Beacom's Anthony Azande put in a layup with five seconds left to hand Caldwell at 66-65 loss in the CACC men's basketball opener for both teams at Mark A. Corino Court at the George R. Newman Center on Tuesday evening.
GBC (4-1, 1-0 CACC) built an 11-point lead at 50-39 with 12:49 left before the Cougars staged a rally, using an 11-1 run, punctuated by a Thompson put-back dunk followed by another slam by sophomore Jaryn Bull (Bronx, N.Y.), to get with in a point at 51-50 with 9:20 to play.
GBC kept ahead the Cougars (0-5, 0-1) until a pair of free throws by freshman forward Markeis Isley (Jersey City, N.J.) with 1:41 left gave CU its first lead since the first seven minutes of the game at 63-62. After a steal by junior guard Todd Rochelle (Laurelton, N.Y.) led to an Evans layup for a three-point CU lead, GBC scored on a layup with 41 second left and after a Caldwell turnover put in what proved to be the game-winner when Rochelle's last effort fell off the rim as time expired.
Thompson had 10 points and two steals as part of his stellar performance, while Bull put in a career-best 12 and nine boards, Isley had 10 and junior guard Isaiah Philbert (Bronx, N.Y.) posted 10.
Caldwell steps back out of league play to visit American International on Sunday.
