Lewis Hits 1,000 Point Mark in 20-Point Effort in Season-Opening Defeat at Adelphi

Cougars Cede Fourth-Quarter Lead in Non-Conference Tilt

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. -- Junior guard Jah'Nel Lewis (Jersey City, N.J.) became the 22nd women's basketball Cougar and 13th in the NCAA era to eclipse the 1000 point mark, dropping 20 in a 73-62 defeat at Adelphi at the Conference Challenge at the Center for Recreation and Sport.

Lewis now has 1016 points after reaching the milestone on a free thrown with 1:48 left in the first quarter.

Trailing, 31-19, with 2:00 to go in the half, the Cougars staged a rally, ignited by a three-pointer by junior guard Neysa Aguilar (Middlesex, N.J.) followed by a four-point play by Lewis, who was fouled draining a triple and made the ensuing free throw with 1:07 left. Moments later, another Lewis basket, this one a conventional layup, pulled CU to within four at 32-28, before settling for a six-point deficit at 34-28 at halftime.

The Cougars (0-1) came out firing in the third, taking their first lead since the first quarter with a 9-1 run, capped by a layup by senior forward Lucy Coogan (Kilkenny, Ireland).

The lead changed hands several times, with the Cougars gaining the edge for the last time at 51-50 on a short jumper by junior guard Brooke Corbett (Staten Island, N.Y.) with 7:01 left.

But the Panthers (1-0) scored the next eight points for a 58-51 advantage midway through the quarter, and extended to as much as a 15 point lead to gain the victory.

Aguilar finished with 12 points and junior forward Harmony Earth-Wiley (Southfield, Mich.) scored 10 in her Cougars debut.

Isabella Asencio had a game-high 31 points for Adelphi.

Caldwell continues play in the Conference Challenge on Saturday vs. Pace at 3 p.m.
