WATERBURY, Conn. — Senior forward Taina Gervais (Port-au-Prince, Haiti) scored two first-half goals and graduate forward Lexi Peto (Toms River, N.J.) put in a pair of second-half tallies, propelling Caldwell women's soccer to a 4-1 CACC triumph over Post University at LaMoy Field on Tuesday night.
The win puts Caldwell (10-2-3, 7-1-1) solidly into third place in the CACC standings and secures a home Quarterfinal matchup in the CACC Tournament on Nov. 8.
On Gervais's first goal, freshman defender Shelby Brunotte (Brick Township, N.J.) lifted a pass from 20 yards into the box, and the Post defender, trying to clear, lost it to Gervais, who ran it down and flipped it over the keeper from the right side, about six yards out, into the top corner for the 1-0 CU lead in the eighth minute.
Then in the 27th, Peto intercepted an Eagles pass and booted a through ball to Gervais, who caught up with it and rolled it past the keeper into the right corner to double the lead for Caldwell.
Post (0-12-2, 0-7-2 CACC) scored just over a minute into the second half to halve their deficit, but the Cougars responded in the 60th minute when senior goalkeeper Ariana Gaminara (Las Vegas) came up to boot a pass over the midfield line to senior forward Rosio Cardenas (Forked River, N.J.), who found Peto on the right side. Peto then lifted a left-footer over the leaping Post keeper for her third goal of the season.
Cardenas then stole a pass, crossed to Peto, who took the pass deflected by Gervais and drilled it in for her second goal of the game to go up 4-1 less than two minutes later.
Sophomore forward Ana Pinzon (Medellin, Colombia) capped the scoring with a marker in the 82nd minute.
Caldwell outshot the hosts, 27-3, earning 11 corners to none by Post.
The Cougars next visit Holy Family on Saturday at noon, then finish the regular season on Tuesday, Nov. 4, vs. Felician.
