CALDWELL, N.J. -- In a matchup of two of the top three teams in the CACC women's soccer table coming into the day, Caldwell and Wilmington played the kind of game expected of two of the league's heavyweights. A header by senior forward
Rosio Cardenas (Forked River, N.J.) in the eighth minute was countered by Wilmington's Eboni Bradshaw's marker in the 77th, leaving the teams with a very evenly-matched 1-1 draw at Caldwell Athletic Field on Saturday.
The Cougars (7-2-3 overall, 5-1-1 CACC) took the lead when Carnenas headed in a corner kick from sophomore midfielder
Melissa Pires (Elizabeth, N.J.). It held up until the Wildcats (6-1-6, 3-0-5) snuck one past senior goalkeeper
Ariana Gaminara (Las Vegas), who registered four saves in the contest.
Wilmington had 13 shots to the Cougars' 12, while CU attempted four corner kicks to two by the visitors.
The result moves the second-place Cougars (16 points) to within three points of idle league leader Jefferson (19), each team having four matches to play. Chestnut Hill, by virtue of its 4-0 win over Lincoln today, slides into third with 15 points (five games remaining), a point ahead of WilmU (14 points, three games left). The top eight teams will advance to the CACC Tournament, with the top four seeds hosting quarterfinal matchups.
Pires and senior forward
Taina Gervais (Port-au-Prince, Haiti) led Cu with four shots each.
The Cougars take on Lincoln, an associate CACC member in women's soccer, on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at Caldwell Athletic Field.
